When Sir Keir Starmer was elected leader of the Labour Party in April 2020 he had a mountain to climb. Labour was reeling from accusations of institutionalised antisemitism and its worst election defeat since 1935, and the country was in the grip of a deadly pandemic which has tested leaders and their policies the world over. One year later and Covid-19 restrictions are finally starting to lift in the UK as parties gear up for local elections in May – Starmer’s first big electoral test as Labour leader.
