The balancing act of Energy Union
The EU imports 53 percent of the energy that it consumes. Six member states depend on a single external supplier. 94 percent of its transport sector relies on imported oil. Wholesale electricity prices are 30 percent higher than those in the USA and wholesale gas prices over 100 percent higher. European competitiveness is lagging behind as the continent remains in the lock of the economic crisis.
The Dods EU monitoring team has produced a briefing document analysing the present and the future of the Energy Union project.
